Scale & Clean
Dental cleanings involve removing plaque (soft, sticky, bacteria infested film), and calculus(tartar) deposits that have built up on the teeth over time. Your teeth are continually bathed in saliva which contains lots of minerals including calcium and enzymes that help to protect the teeth. While these minerals are doing good for the teeth and mouth, they also cause any soft biofilms (plaque) to go hard and calcify over time. Usually this tartar is tooth coloured and can easily be mistaken for part of the tooth, however it can easily pick up staining from our foods and drinks and can be brown to black in colour.
Over time, if these deposits remain on the teeth they hold bacteria at the tooth and gum surface, causing an inflammatory response in your gums, and over long periods of time can destroy healthy tissue. Your toothbrush won’t be able to remove the hard deposits, so it is important to have regular scale and cleans to ensure this build up stays under control and allowing for better gum health and easier cleaning at home.
